Lina and her family are brought on a years-long journey, through unimaginable train conditions, cruel work camps, and torture, which ends in the wastelands of Siberia, and the reader is along for this harrowing journey. Throughout this novel, the reader sees Lina fight for her life and her family’s well-being, while promising to ensure that the world knows what she, and so many others like her, have endured.
Between Shades of Gray is Sepetys’ first novel, which received critical acclaim almost instantly. It is the second book I have read by her, and I couldn’t put it down. I read it in a day. If you like historical fiction, especially anything involving World War II, you will be taken away by this novel. I reviewed Salt to the Sea as well, and that also doesn’t disappoint. Both are available in our library. Come check them out!
