Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms is a Japanese manga (comic) written by Fumiyo Kouno. It contains only one volume and is a very quick read; it wouldn't even take an hour. However, it still manages to tell a very powerful story. Kouno explores the life of a family in the years following the dropping of the Atomic Bomb during WWII. Their story manages to be both heart-warming and heart-wrenching as they deal with many struggles like survivor's guilt, fear from others, and the loss of their home and loved ones. The art style used can be considered simplistic, but it doesn't take away from the story. Instead, it adds a certain charm and shows with awful casualness their everyday life, one they just accept despite how horrible it is. This tale isn't accusatory or horribly depressing. It's nice mixture of hopeful and melancholy, and the balance has a message more powerful than either extreme would send.
